Default What is in your goldfish tank??

Hey everybody, I've got a 29 Gal goldfish tank and I was thinking about getting a couple more fish for it. I can't decide on weather or not to go with an Oranda goldfish, or a non-goldfish. Does anybody have a goldfish tank with other types of fish in it? What kind do you have? Also my tank is warm water, usually kept between 72-74 F.

Whatever u choose, just make sure u don't overstock your tank, 5 fish seem to be enough for a 29 gal tank...

To be honest I think you are already overstocked, It might be working okay for now if you are taking very good care of the tank but I wouldn't risk more fish.

I doubt its overstocked, I've seen 20 Gal tanks on here fillled with 10 fish or more. Two of my goldfish is 3 1/2 inches including the fins, and the other two are 2 1/2 inches long. They don't like hiding in plants or going near them, so there is only a couple in there. I think there is plenty room for them.

keep in mind you should have about 3 - 4 gallons of water per inch of goldfish. you have about 12" of goldfish so far so you should have 36 - 48 gallons for them for them to remain happy and healthy. i agree with 'snail' that you may have reached a balance with the fish and filtration you have now, but you risk throwing it completely out of whack by adding more in and might loose all of your fish that way. :(

and yes there are people who overstock their tanks but thats doesnt make it right. i mean putting 10 fish in a 20 gallon tank? unless they are tiny and less than 1/2" that jus seems cruel doesnt it?

Ok, but the inch per gallon rule is always different, some say 3-4, some say 1 gallon per inch, but if it is 3-4 than you are 1 gallon short, and soon you'll have to get rid of a fish once yours get bigger. So I don't go by the inch per gallons rule. But there is someone on the forum with an Oscar in a 25 gallon, along with a couple other fish, which hopefully is only temporary....

Most stocking guides go by the size of the adult fish, not the size it is now. Whatever way you calculate it it's hard to get around the fact that goldfish are very messy fish and can grow very large. My point is that even if things are going great now I would think carefully about adding more fish because you are already pushing the limits. The fish you have are still growing and could easily outgrow the tank.

EDIT: Have you done water tests out of interest? The ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings would help indicate how things are going.

I have heard a good rule for not overstocking is a gallon of water per inch of a fish that way they all have enuf room. That's what people at the pet store told me the last time I. Got some new fish. I have a 100 gallon tank with 2 plecos 2 gold fish and a black moor

Really goldfish should have more than one gallon of water per inch. They are such messy fish and are large bodied. One inch per gallon is a good rule to go by for many of the small/medium community fish.

Each goldfish should have at least ten gallons...just saying. I think you're well stocked!

Right now I have one "dragon-eyed" Oranda/Tele cross and a few Amazon Swords.
