I had a pair of Telescope goldfish in a 10 gallon tank for quite a while as a child and they seem to do okay. Keep in mind that they can get to be anywhere from 4"-8" long which is 1/3-2/3 the total length of your tank.

most people would recommend having 20 gallons per goldfish, then 10 more gallons for each additional goldfish. One of the reasons for this is size, as mentioned, but also because goldfish produce a lot of waste. It's fairly common for goldfish tanks to have double the filtration you would normally need for a tank of x size, but if you're going for such a small tank, I'd say triple filtration wouldn't be out of the question. Unfortunately, with most setups, that would be horribly expensive and inefficient, and would also create too much current in the tank. Fancy gold fish like that don't appear to be the best swimmers in the world, so this could be a problem.
Personally, I'd try something like tetras in a planted tank. You could get a nice school of 6-8 of most, I believe, and having them in a planted tank really brings out the best in them. There's a huge variety of tetras available, so you should be able to find something to your taste. Part of the reason why plants and tetras get along so well together is that some tetras can be a bit delicate (neons and cardinals come to mind), and plants help them stay relaxed and help keep the water parameters in check. There are hardy tetras, like Black Skirts that can take conditions that are easier to maintain, but still, proper maintenance is needed for all types of fish. Live plants can be really easy to care for, and the fact that they grow and change over time really adds to an aquarium...try them if you can ![]() Anyways, don't mind the rambling, hope this helps |

Honestly...I don't think it would be for very long. Even if it was healthy, you would have to be finding either a new tank, or a new home for it once it got much bigger. It's best then, just to get a fish that stays small, perhaps one that looks like a goldfish. Or maybe another kind of fish that has as much personality as a goldfish...a betta or paradise fish maybe? With a betta that has a social personality, you could have a small school of another type of fish too.

Like everyone else said, it's not a good idea to havea goldie in that small of a tank. If it's size get's stunted it's organs will continue to grow and it will die. If you have the slightest compassion for the fish, you wont do that to it. It would be like you or I being forced to live in a closet. We could DO it, but it wouldnt be comfy and it would stink with all the waste in such a confined area. Look for something else better suited for your tank, or upgrade toa bigger tank.

is there anyway I could have one in a ten gallon. and a friend of mine has a 10 gallon with idk 9 inch fish. I grew big and it's lived for 5years. sometimes the waters half way filled so it's fin has to be slanted. and i feel bad for it. but it's still alive and very health and they clean there tank every 2 months. it's a big white goldfish. so if she can keep that alive I don't see why I can't keep a telescope goldie. and they grow slow. is it common for them to live long bc I'd be happy to buy a bigger tank when itz out grown its own! do they grow fast?

A healthy goldfish can live 25 to 30 years, It would be ok for a short while in a 10 then you would need to either rehome or get a bigger tank to keep it healthy. A 20 gal doesn't take up anymore space than a 10 except that is taller.
Sounds like your friend don't care about his fish and I hope that you do.

Well, I don't mean to be rude, but if 3 out of 3 people tell you to either get a bigger tank and/or different fish, that might mean something. Craigslist often has some excellent deals, if you're lucky, or look on eBay or something. They don't cost too much if you find the right deal.

Do plenty of water changes each week to keep the tank clean, and in the meantime watch craigslist or freecycle, many times you can get dirt cheap or even free.
You must also keep the water filtered so you must have a filter and an airstone wouldn't hurt as they need plenty of water movement.

Goldfish aren't schooling fish so they don't need a companion. If you wanted to get two goldfish (like stated above) you you probably want a 30 gallon tank (20 gallons for the first fish and an extra 10 for the second). You however say this isn't an option. I know you want a goldfish, but with the size of your tank I wouldn't recommend it.

It won't get nearly as lonely as it will get depressed due to all the physical pain it will be in from its organs outgrowing its outsides which will be stunted due to the undersized tank it will be living in.
I asked my mom how long the telescope goldfish I had in a ten gallon tank as a kid stayed alive and she said "about a year". They average lifespan of a goldfish should be A LOT LONGER than that.

There are some goldfish that have lived 40+ years with the proper care, and I believe some fancies that can get a foot long- wih a large enough pond or tank
