Hello all,
I'm new to fish care and i just got a 3 gallon mini tank with just one black moor. I read about cycling after i set it up. I did a partial water change and i'm going to buy a test kit, i just need to know what levels are good and when i should change the water or add salt. Also i see a little white blotch on his tail and i can see it from the other side of his tail too kinda like oil on paper. Could this be a fungus or something from not cycling the tank first? He seems fine and eats normally. Its been up and running for almost 72 hours and i did a pwc yesterday. Advice would be very helpful, thanks ![]() |

Well, I hate to tell you, but the tank is too small for a goldfish... 1 goldfish alone needs 20-30gallons, and then an extra 10gallons are needed for every goldfish after that. Black Moor's still get big.
I'd suggest getting a bigger tank, or re-homing the fish. In a 3g you can really only house a Betta fish and some shrimp or snails (they will need a heater though.) Not sure on the white spot, can you get a picture of it?

Yeah he needs a bigger tank. The white spot you see is a common fungus that is usually caused by fluctuations in temperature, which happens very easily in small tanks.
When I began, I had a five gallon tank and put three goldies in it. I was naive, but they survived in it with constant water changes. When I upgraded to ten gallons, one died, I'm sure from all the stress. Then when I upgraded again to 15 another died from a bacterial infection. It was still too small a tank for the one I had left, but surprisingly he has survived, and now lives in a spacious 55 gallon with three others. The less water really just means more water changes for you, and more stress on the fish. Invest in a 20 gallon, cycle it for over a month before putting any fish in it ( there is plenty of info on cycling on here nd throughout the Internet). I hope your fish does well. Black moors are certainly the cutest goldfish there are. |

I have a 29 gallon tank with one black moor. I've had the tank up for almost 4 years and previously had an oranda and a ryukin. The ryukin always had problems almost from the beginning. They are both gone and for the last year I've had one black moor. I do water changes about once a month - usually about a 1/3 change to a 1/2 water change. I replace the aquarium salt for the amount of water change. I have more than ample filtration. When I test the water it is usually good. My problem is the white spots on my moor. Sound like what the initial question of this thread mentioned except I have a larger tank, one fish and seem to be doing all the right things. When I see the white spots on the tail and sometimes on the body I use the Marcyn Plus biospheres and medicated food pellets. It seems to go away but lately it reappears about every couple of months or after I cease giving the medi pellets. I think is fungus - but why does it reoccur so often? Temps don't fluctuate to much. Fish seems fine otherwise but I'm just sort of consistanly medicating. Any suggestions? It's hard to take a pic of the white spots. I've tried. I need to see how to post a pic of my tank. When I figure it out I will. Thanks.
