Hey guys yesterday i went to my local pet shop to buy 2 Tiger barbs for my aquarium and found this fish in the goldfish tank when i asked the guy there he said that the fish has "fin rot" and was planning to feed it to his piranha's. I thought that was lame and i read some where that fin rot can be cured so I bought the fish from him and bought it home. Currently the fish is in my 10gal hospital tank with a water filter and proper aeration. I have also added Melafix.
What more should i do and will it survive? Once the fish is cured I'm planning to give it to my nephew.

fin rot isn't deadly, but should be stopped immediately. You can buy cheap medicine at your pet store than can heal this!

I think feeding it to the piranhas because it has Fin Rot is a bit extreme, it can be easily cured and I have heard good things about Melafix.
If the guy in the shop is willing to discard a fish for something as simple as Fin Rot then I would think twice about taking any advice from him as any other shop would sort the problem and sell the fish. |

thats why bought him.. anyways fish is doing fine.. he was sitting on bottom of tank for 1st day and yesterday i feed him some boiled peas and he is full active now.. the fungus on his body has decreased by a LOT and his gold color is coming..
I have another question.. do fin rot spread?? i mean keeping him in my goldfish tank is good idea or bad idea ?

Finrot is due to poor water conditions.the best treatment for it is good clean water.Do daily large waterchanges until you see regrowth, should take about a week or so.

Make sure that your nephew has a 20 - 30 gallon tank as gold fish are messy fish and grow quite large. You should also double the filtration on the tank (20 gallon will need 40 gallon filter and 30 gallon tank will need a 60 gallon filter).
