Default Free Large Common Goldfish near Pittsburgh, PA and/or care options

I don't have a picture right now. Will try to post one later. Here's his/her story. Last summer at our county fair my 9-year-old bounced a ping-pong ball into a small fish bowl of water and won a small gold fish. We took him home, and put him in an unfiltered 2 gallon bowl on our kitchen island, really not expecting him to live more than a day or two. We did have Goldfish flakes for him/her. Well after 2 weeks he was still alive and keeping up on the unfiltered 2 gallon bowl was getting to be a hassle, so we put it in my 75 gallon freshwater tank with assorted community fish. To our surprise this fish is now almost a foot long. What happened???? It eats whatever is put in the tank for the other fish, tropical fish flakes, blood worms and I recently saw it swallow a half an algae wafer whole! It is causing eco problems in my tank now with my magnum 350 canister filter not being able to keep up and I suspect it may have eaten a baby dwarf african frog. I really want it out of my tank and would happily give it to anyone in my area who wants it. I may ask our local pet store if they will take it.

My 9-year-old wants to keep it of course. If I do keep it, I would get a separate tank for his room to put it in. He already has a 5 gallon with two clawed frogs. I know the giant goldfish won't fit in the 5 gallon now. Was thinking I would need a minimum of 20 gallon with a heavy duty filter. Just much more work than I wanted to get into for a gold fish won at a fair.

Any takers?

check with your lfs if they have room they might take it and give you store credit or if you know anybody with a outside koi pond might have to wait a month or so for the koi pond good luck

yea I have the same issue except I have 3 goldfish, although they only got to be 7-8 inchs. Your local LFS may want them, if you let your son get something back in exchange he might be more willing to let them go. This spring I'm starting a backyard pond for mine.
If you are going to keep him you would need at least like a 30 gallon hes not done growing yet.

I swear who ever invented that game must of owned the local petshop.lol

I agree, it needs at least a 30 gallon. If you decide to keep it look for a second hand tank and a good filter. I can understand that it's a lot for one fish but if you can't find him a good home consider it. Goldfish make nice pets for kids because they have good personality and are hardy and colorful. Because they don't need heated water a goldfish tank is not expensive to run once it's set up.

I won goldfish at the fair myself when I was young and had them for years but I'm afraid not many of the poor things live long due to ignorance and neglect, it really should be made illegal.
