This is probably a dumb question, but can goldfish eat to much? I have 2 goldfish and I let the algae in the tank grow on the rocks so they can eat it whenever.. it seems that they have huge bellies and unevenly full and kind of lumped out on one side.. they seem fine otherwise. I only feed flake food a few times a week otherwise they just eat the algae.. I have had them for about 6 months or so and I don't remember them being so fat and full looking. Any thoughts?

"Lumped out on one side" is usually not a good sign with goldfish, or any fish for that matter. It could be the start of dropsy or bloat, neither of which is good. Test your water and see if there is an issue there and start there first, as it doesn't sound like a feeding issue.

My water tests fine.. its funny though, my water always tests perfect.. even when I have a fish die out of nowhere. Do you think that test kits can "go bad"?

When you say "Fine" what precisely does that mean? What are you testing for and with what kind of kit?
You need ammonia, nitrite and nitrate testing, in a liquid test kit like the API master test kit. If you are using this test kit, make sure on the nitrate test to shake bottle #2 vigorously, for at least a minute straight before using it, otherwise you'll get a false negative. |

Wow... sorry its been so long to get back to you on this.. I have a master test kit that does ph, high range ph, ammonia, nitrite, gh and kh. All my levels always test in the normal range.. except I do have high ph, and sort of hard water.. but I don't think that is a major problem. The test kit is really old so I don't know if the chemicals "go bad" or not.
