The sad thing is people who don't know any better will do exactly as shown. It should be almost like seeing a doctor, get a few different opinions, then you will see exactly the right way.

It's one thing when a inexperienced goldfish owner doesn't realize what their pet needs but some giving out 'professional' advice should have some idea of what they are talking about!

I'm glad you researched before you bought your fish. It's always best to do that, although I can't blame people for assuming that the LFS will give suitable advice.

If you can post picks of your molly in a thread, lots of people will be able to help. Generally a molly will look fat and start getting a square shape. Most female mollies come pregnant.

I have a Male and Female Molly, and the female is usually prego. From what I've seen 2 things happen.

just behind the gills you will notice a bulge of the belly
profile(?) if that's the correct term looking from head to tail you should see her sides bulging as well.

My molly so far was like this when I got here and is now again like this. When I bought her the LFS said she was prego.

I went to the link and I posted a comment. That's really the only solution, is when people put up horrible advice like this for people who know better to say something.
