Default Spinach for otos

So, the zucchini is a hit... almost too much, as the snails all convene on it and hog it from the otos..... I may have to start putting 2 pieces in at once so the Oto's get a shot at it. (The piece has been in there for only 24 hours and it's already falling apart b/c of the snails - they wouldn't even let got when I was taking it out of the tank. They all fell from the top of the water and one I even had to pull/scrape off on a stone, lol).

I'm trying spinach with them tonight, since the zucchini lasted such a short time and I want to be sure they are well fed. I used a bamboo bbq skewer with the zucchini.... and I'm hoping it works for the spinach. I've speared a few pieces and now they are on the skewer looking like plant leaves. I'm hoping they will smell it and come lounge on them and eat them. (1. Do they tend to eat much spinach? 2. Is this a good way to deliver it to them?) Hopefully they don't mind the stems, lol.

3. Does any one know if they like brussel sprouts? I've heard yes, but don't want to put it in the tank if it's bad for them.

Spinach is another good food however, feed it sparingly.

As for Brussel Sprouts, I'm not sure about the Oto's but I've heard of it being fed to others. The biggest draw back to it is that it will foul very quickly.

Why sparingly with the spinach? (Is there something in it that's not great for them?)

So far, just the snails are going for the spinach. They're pigs! I'm going to have to put in a few bamboo skewers with zucchini or spinach from now on, since the snails like to hog it all.

I put like 1 big leaf and 3-4 smaller spinach leaves in the tank..... is that bad?

LOL, I had to laugh when I saw your note about the stems. I think if snails and herbivorous fish really minded stems, they wouldn't survive long in the wild!

Lol, this is very true. I almost think of my pets as people, hahaha. I guess they're just happy to eat. :D I can just imagine them tapping on the side of the glass, "Excuse me... there are stems on this spinach! Please remove them!" Hahahaha!

Spinach contains Oxalic acid which over time is not a good thing. In small amounts (fed sparingly) it won't harm them.

Good to know. Thanks! (Seems only the snails liked it any way, so I don't have to worry about the oto's).
