About a week ago, I was given four very shy young parrot cichlids. I'm in the process of 'redecorating' their 55 gallon tank that they currently share with two juvenile giant danios I swiped from another 55 in my home.
They have a favorite huge hidey rock that they slide into at strange angles and generally make themselves invisible. I want to make them as comfortable as possible in the hopes that they actually swim out in the open without being bribed with bloodworms. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm open to adding more dither fish to the tank, and am very fond of cory catfish, but don't know if they might stress my parrots out by bumbling around. I'm going from bright blue gravel to brown and have lots of big rocks harvested from a lake in Kentucky. I was thinking of buying some 3in diameter plastic pluming tubes from the hardware store, even though they'd look pretty ugly. . . argggh.

just wait. patience is a virtue. all you should do is provide lots of hiding spaces with piled rocks, cichlid stones, and an occasional plant (yes it can be done). just wait, feed regularly, water changes regularly, and just wait. they will eventually be accustomed and not be so shy.

The cichlids are finally out and about - they've got lots of rock formation hiding options and an old teapot that two of them happily share. Just yesterday the most shy of the four of them ate bloodworms from my hand, and the most aggressive one was a gentleman.
