While it is a problem,no one knows exactly how long they will live......
Scratching continually means something is irritating them. Most the time it points to parasites, but the gaping mouth makes me think ammonia. We need a little info on your setup Tank size inhabitants waterchange schedule and test results from:Ammonia Nitrite Nitrate. The best thing you can do,is right now remove half the water and replace with fresh.

i changed 25 percent last night, could it be that i just added 30 danios and goldfish to the tank? i quarntined the fish and they were fine. could it be because i added so many fish so quickly and caused an ammonia boost? i usually never add so many fish but my small jack dempsey and small oscar eat them like crazy, i trade fish with the lfs and never let my fish get biggerr than 6 inches in the tank. i have never tested the water, what would i need to do that? its 37 tall, with 4 inch sailfin pleco, 5inch oscar 3 inches dempsey and 18 feeder fish left in the tank. thanks for the help

That would cause a big ammonia spike, plus the fact that feeder fish can cause all kinds of problems if one happens to have some sort of disease. They really wouldn't need more than 2 each if you want to feed them feeders. Your fish are already heavy waste producers then you added that many, you are probably having a huge ammonia spike.
Get yourself a liquid test kit at least for ammonia and keep an eye on your water parameters. If not you could have all sorts of problems and loose your fish.

2 possible reasons for your problem:
1.parasites 2.bad water I would say in 90% of cases it's the water quality. |
