Hey everybody I have a question about my firemouths. I have two which I thought were a female and a male but I am not so sure now. Both have displayed their red gills blowout to the newbies in the tank so now I'm thinking they are both male!? Do females do this too or just males? Please let me know! Thanks!

Yep, females can flare, too. They did it a lot in the pet store where I worked. Female bettas, too.

The firemouth is diplayed in both sexes. They use the display to defend themselves and their territory. They are an aggresive Cichlid and need lots of room. They will eat small fish. Since yours don't fight each other, they are probably a pair or two females.
