Default Help: Cycling a 30 Gal Tank for Cichlids

Need some help here please. I just bought a 30 gallon tank, I have a couple of Cichlids, one African and one South America. I got them in a small tank right now and they get along just fine. I want to move them over to my 30 gallon tank, but how do I cycle it?

With one Cichlid?

Or both?

Or do I not cycle with a Cichlid, instead some other fish and how many?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

A thirty gallon tank is not big enough for SA or African Cichlids. It is better than where they are now. This smaller tank the fish are currently in is cycled?

If the current tank is cycled use some of the substrate/rocks/plants in the 30g to help jump start the cycle.

Do a search on this forum for "nitrogen cycle" for all the info on the process. Or go to the link below.

What kind of african and what type of S.A.? Typically, South American Cichlids and African Cichlids need different water parameters. S.A. require a lower pH, Africans usually require a pH that's is MUCH higher. AND DON"T CYCLE WITH YOUR CICHLIDS! Do some reading up on FISHLESS cycling or pick up some FEEDER FISH from your LFS or LPS to cycle your tank. I cycled my tank w/ a COUPLE of feeders. This is going to be painstakingly hard to do BUT...BE PATIENT! It will pay off for you and your fish if you READ about the fish you will be keeping. READ and learn about PROPER cycling. Good Luck.

O.k.... you point of the different ph levels is one i didn't consider until after I bought the fish. Hence, my plan has always been to have a 30 gallon set up and eventually get a 55 gallon set up in a 2-3 months. So my plan right now is to make my 30 gallon a small South American Cichlid set up, and eventually take my African and put hm in my 55 gallon set up.

Is there any secret to fishless cycling? Or is just just a matter of running you water through the filtration system?

Right now I have a Neon Jewel Cichlid and a Red Zebra. Unfortunately, my other two tanks are not properly cycled, and I'm trying to get this one right. When I first got into the hobby 3-4 months ago, I bought my set and fish before doing the proper research, and it's been a hard lesson. Thank you for the 'nitrogen cycle' heads up, I will do.

I've said it before and I'll say it again..."GET AS INFORMED AS POSSIBLE". Take in everything possible, use all the resources available to you. (This forum, any other online informational sites(be careful, don't believe EVERYTHING you read), pick up a book or two from your local bookstore or LFS). You get the idea. When you can read about something, then you get to see it and understand it and experience it as it happens in your tank...It makes the hobby soooo much more enjoyable for you and your fish. I'm still kinda new to all of this myself but I do a lot of reading to try to understand as much as possible!
