Oh, well there probably is not anything wrong, he is probably going through the color change, or breeding color process

I love my Bumble Bee Cichlids mostly cause they flair their strips from dark to light. Actually most of my fish are quite happy and flair the colors and fins to put on quit a display while watching. It fascinates me how fish can control their colors semingly at will (agression, mating, whatever). My Rainbow fish are the best at doing this with the Bright Yellow stripe on their head you can even watch as it ripples while fading. They also tend to increase the black in their body so their blue gets to be a midnight blue with a black (what I call) racing strip from head to tail.

He's still young, and bound to change colors a bit, so I'd just keep watching him everyday for a while. I had a male convict by himself that often changed colors. Most of the time he was dark gray with faded stripes, (I'm sure he was bored in there by himself) and other times he would have a nice blueish color, a couple times he was more white with black stripes. A good rule is to watch your fish everyday. That way you can get to know your fishes habits and quirks and you can catch signs of illness much sooner by physical appearance and changes in habits.
