I am wondering a few things on death and current status on 2 of my fish.
First is i had a pregnant Swordtail die Sunday. I noticed her gills looked flushed, kinda white on the inside and gasping for breath at the top of the water. Would a lack of oxygen make her gills kinda white instead of the reddish color. Second, right now i have a glowlight fish that i think has hole in the head but not sure. I read it is mostly in cichlids. I notice a few days or week ago a silvery, white appearance on the top left of its head. No holes or cuts just the color. Today i notice it looks like a deep gash with some tissue attached to it. Is it HITH. Oh also to note, he twitches every once in a while, kinda like when you the chills and you do that cold quick shiver, all i can relate it to. Some stats on the tank.. 20 gal, 2x weekly 50% PWC, dose w/ flourish 1x week ..only second time dosed today, 6-7 plants in tank, use RO/DI water for changes. No carbon in my filtration, no signs on any other fish, DIY Co2 about 1 BBl per second, feed them tetra baby shrimp, tetra blood worms, tetra flakes, tetra color bites and omega one super color small pellets. I use the omega one, flakes and color bites mostly and give the shrimp and worms only a few times a week. As of yesterday Amm 0 Nitrates 10 Nitrites 0 Checked Phospate today - 0 or at least to low to read Here is are the pics If you click on the pics you can go to the photo gallery and click on them to make them larger to really see the problems Ok on to the next. I have/had 3 baby swordtails born 9/26. All were doing well until today. 2 of them had this white looking excess white tissue, i think, growing from the tail on one and one pectoral fin on the other. The one with the pectoral died earlier tonight and the other seems to have no deadly signs. What looks weird is the ST that is ok has the regular shaped tail, kinda like a fan, but the one that has the tail tissue i guess looks more like an arrow head. Does anyone know what this is and if it needs to be treated/treatable. Heres the pics I have more pics if needed Last edited by jeff5347 : 10-24-2011 at 10:06 PM. |

What are your water parameters.
We need to know actual readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Ph. How long has the tank been running and how long has fish been in the tank. Also did you cycle the tank. How often do you do water changes. Sounds more like water quality isssues.

Looks like the one fish just sustained some tyoe of injury over HTH. It is nearly exclusive to Oscars and large cichlids...and some saltwater fish. The Swordtail just looke like clamped fins, but I can't tell. Do you have any General Cure or Quick Cure meds?
Are you doing 100% RODI with your water changes? |

^^^^^ The only med i have is from having tanks years a go. It is a liquid super ick cure for FW by API. The Label looks nothing like now. It doesnt have the new API insignia look. aLso yes to RO/DI. I just got replenish and and dosed 16ml in the 20 gal yesterday. I read that it is mostly oscars and salt thas why i wondered if this is what he has.

one other thing. Since i introduced him into the tank he has always stayed in the same spot of the tank, bottom left side about an inch above the grave near the glass. His "area" has never changed. he will come out to eat and swims around a bit and then goes "home". When he stays in heis area he is upright and looks to be in the normal swimming position, but when he was going for food this morning he looks to sometimes swim at a 45 degree angle. SO if you looked at him headon he looked like this / or \
The ST fry is doing fine. Has the white tissue/growth/whatever on the tail but in all other aspects shows no signs of stress, disease, or such. Swims normal. Could this have been caused by adding the replenish. Like i stated i added 16Ml as stated on the bottle for a 20 gal size, actually a little less. From what this reads, Aquarium tropical fish disease diagnostics. Fish treatment. Sick fish, ill fish, cure fish., i may have given them a shock and could this be the fry death, fry "clamped tail", and "hith" for the Glowlight? Last edited by jeff5347 : 10-25-2011 at 09:35 AM. |

I had a convict die from HITH. It looks simlilar but I'm not convinced your fish has it. When did you notice it? Did it appear overnight or within a few days? Did it start small and you noticed it getting bigger over the past week? HITH starts off as tiny holes the size of a pin head, then they get bigger. In advanced cases it looks like worm tunnels in a dead log. Thats what it reminded me of anyway.

No this one looke like the scales lost color and were silvery. Then one day i noticed the area was totally exposed and the scales in that area were gone and there was the "hole". The LFS emp thinks he may have a bacterial inf. It looks like it may be healing as there is a blck lining almost like the scale color around the wound. It to me looks to be getting smaller as in starting to scab up. The LFS gave me Paragaurd by seachem to help this and the other problems in the tank and now i think 2 other fish have ick, only 4-6 dots each but...
