My brother started a guppy tank with 5 guppies (4 gallons) after cycling for only a week (Petco liars) and 3 of the fish died. He is currently adding a red platy of some kind and there is brown algae on the sides and the algae on the pebbles i gave him has turned brown also. any warnings or anything?

Nothing major to worry about. Just reduce feeding, keep up with the water changes, and maybe add a plant or two. The good news is that brown algae is unaffected by light, so no need to black out. Either way, algae isn't bad for the fish, we just don't like looking at it.
