I just got some betta mahachai. They are supposed to be slightly brackish. The breeder raised these in tap like domestic bettas. But i am wanting to kinda give them some natural, slightly salty water. So i need some advice on how to go about this.Must i use marine salt?Whats the difference between that and sea salt?I know freshwater salt wont work, but i dont see the difference i the marine and sea.also i read a teaspoon per gallon was fine, but isnt that almost full salt?as you can see ive never had brackish fish. They seem fine i would just like to give them the best possible.
Thanks for any help and advice!

The salt you use to make a tank brackish is the same you use to make a saltwater mix, just use half as much. If you change a tank (with fish in it)from fresh to brackish, do it slowly. Take out 10% and replace with seawater (1.025). Do this every day until you get the desired specific garvity. Brackish water fishes very quite a bit on their salt wter tolerance and requirements. Slightly brackish water would be about 1.002. My favorite BW fish is the Scat. It needs to be in pure SaltWater when adult. One of the big casinos in Las Vegas has a school of these in a very latge tank swimming with Leapord Sharks!

from my understanding and use aquarium salt and sea salt are two different animals aquarium salt is like an aloe for the fish where sea salt has all the minerals that fish needs to thrive.get a hydrometer a must--having only 1 fish is not that bad.not familar with bettas so not sure what he needs i thought bettas breath air from surface thats why they dont like moving water.i personally have 2 bw tanks 40g mollie----40g gsp my sg is at 1.022 on both because i use a centalized water mixing can every one seem to do good so ill run with it.my gsp is solo thats what he likes every time i tried addind hes been very upset with me very personal fish and they can live long time.so anyways many options just start off slow move your way into it.no stupid questions---always peeps to give you feed back, and enjoy your finney friends they give back what you put in for them

Gosh ive neglected this thread.Susan,i have trouble getting Gerald, lol. He seems busy.
I have them now in slight salinity.I have no clue how to measure this,i have no salt hydrometer or what not. They eat well, but they are still stressed.Soon they will be moved to the macs tank, the macs are going into a bit larger tank.I want plants but not sure what will do ok with brackish water, other than java ferns,or so ive read. They are very jumpy but i have them in the living room.I want to make them less jumpy, lol.Worked with the macs, lol. ironbone, yes they are like most bubblenesting bettas, where they like very little surface movement, and i think will nest in pots as well as surface nesting. They are anabantids,i believe all bettas from the gladiator to the simplex are as well. They very pretty and its sad they wont be in the wild very much longer, which is why i am adamant on getting these guys set up well enough to spawn. I can see the males are darker than the females, but i am wondering if they are pure strained or if they have imbellis in them.
