(Sung to the tune of "I saw her Standing there")
[I saw him swimming there I saw him swimming there... Well he was coloured a light green... If you know what I mean? And the way he swam.... Was far beyond his fins, Well how could I fall for another, OOOOooooh! When I~ saw~ him ~swimming there, I saw him swimming there I saw him swimming there]. ![]() I had the pleasure today to befriend a new resident at the local aquatic pet shop he was a Porcupine Puffer and he was put in a brackish tank where I am sure was more saltwater than brackish the unit he was house in ran the width of the fish room and he was very congenial to follow me through the store kind of like a personal shopper and his big baby blues made his grotesque appearance so loveable. I have seen Dogface Puffers who I have liked for similar reasons but this guy I'll call him Pete was so endearing and now I want a Puffer. My background is with South American Cichlids particularly from the Amazon river. I mainly breed Discus and rare srains of Angelfish,Rams and corys. however when it comes to Puffers and their proper realistic conditioning I have limited knowledge so before I dive in I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions about the puffer conditioning and differences from South Asian and South Americans strains. I just don't want to bring Pete home to meet the relatives if he is just going to be unhappy and p.'o.'d at me while he gives me the hairy eyeball. The information I have about Puffers comes via the internet and books however it has been my experience when reading books about the types of fish I breed that some information is really unapplicable to the nature of the fish considering they are coming from tank raised environments. So any help would be appreciated...thank you in advance |

I would first ask them to show you the salinity/specific gravity of the water he's in so you wont accidently put him in shock. Another thing to test if the water hes in is too salty is to see if he looks "dehydrated".
Aquaculture is a big plus in the aquarium hobby. Tank bred fish have many advantages over wild caught. Your local fish store more likely gets his fish from a supplier in california so its more likely a flip of a coin in getting a tank bred fish due to their budget and availability in the local waters. what you can do is bring him home and see if he gets along. if he doesnt, bring him back. I wish you luck and hope you get your new friend ;)
