Have you tried feeding him with live insects yet?
I would put a little branch over your tank with some gum on the end. Then any time you catch a fly, beetle, cricket, etc. Stick it to the gum and watch your fish's natural hunting instinct! Make sure the branch is over the center of the tank though because some archer fish are known to jump at their food instead of spitting at it. It is too hard to tell from your pictures, but I would guess he is a banded archer. You need a better camera to capture the scales and dorsal fin better. The banded tends to be silver and black whereas the large/small scale tend to have alot more yellow and black towards the back....but still hard to say. Here is a small scaled archer. Notice how small the scales are compared to the other species:

thanks for taking the time to look. i feed him crickets and if i can catch them house flys. Ive lowered the water in the tank and have bendy vine drapping over the water so he can do his magic trick. he's a crack shot to. Id say the first pic you put up best matched him with colour and marking. I'll try and get a better pic.

The archerfish (Spinner Fish or Archer Fish) are a family (Toxotidae) of fish known for their habit of preying on land based insects and other small animals by literally shooting them down with water droplets from their specialized mouths. The family is small, consisting of seven species in the genus Toxotes; which typically inhabit brackish waters of estuaries and mangroves, but can also be found in the open ocean as well as far upstream in fresh water India to the Philippines, Australia, and Polynesia.Archerfish are remarkably accurate in their shooting; adult fish almost always hit the target on the first shot. They can bring down an insect that includes grasshoppers, spiders and butterflies on a branch overhanging the water.
