Default Aquarium salt and Marine salt

Hi there, quick question.
How much salt per gallon to set up a tank for a Green spotted puffer should be used?
I know marine salt is recommended but would the salinity be the same if you added like 3 tablespoons per US gallon of aquarium or marine salt?
Thanks.

Brackish water is the result of the mixing of Ocean Water and Fresh Water and contains many chemcals in it besides Soduim Chloride. Just adding Aquarium Salt to your tank wouldn't add these exrtra chemicals. The common way of measurrng the salt content of aquarium water is through specific gravity. Ask your fish source what theirs is and try to duplicate it.

The reason im asking is that i realise for a reef setup you need the extra trace elements that come with the marine salt but why would a brackish fish need those trace elements?

I used Instant Ocean Salt to set up my brackish tank for my green spotted puffer. I took how much it said to use for full salt water and reduced it by half. That put me at a salinity of 1.013. You will have to play around with it because every sea salt is different. Also realize that you will have to drip acclimate him into that salinity. It will take an hour or two. Also what size tank are you trying to do this with.

It took me exactly a 1 1/4 cups of salt per 5 gallons. That was with Instant Ocean

Brackish water is water that has more salinity than fresh water, but not as much as seawater. It may result from mixing of seawater with fresh water, as in estuaries, or it may occur in brackish fossil aquifers. The word comes from the Middle Dutch root "brak," meaning "salty".

I found this useful breakdown of water salinity based on dissolved salts in parts per thousand (ppt)
  • Fresh water: <0.5
  • Brackish water: 0.5-30
  • Saline water: 30-50
  • Brine: >50
