i have a 55 gallon over flow with sump tank. i just got some coral and they are doing fine but i have no skimmer. should i get one?

On a tank that size i would. The alternative is weekly 5% water changes, which can be a real pain. here is a decent one for the money. Reef Octopus Needle/Pin Wheel Protein Skimmer

I do monthly 20% and have had any issue's in 10 years.

It will too a point depend on what corals you plan to keep as to WC's. A sps dominated tank will deplete your cal, mag and cause the alk to drop fast but as long as those stay stable and within range monthly WC's should be fine and you can dose for those very easy.
