I think because of the trouble with raising a brood. In order to get the best possible outcome, they need daily 100% waterchanges. They are sensative to water quality.

What Ive heard anywhoo.

I was going to ask why Bettas seem to be cheap since they require constant water changes when young too, but those things could survive in a toilet once they mature, so I guess that's why they're a little cheaper to stock and sell, lol

Bettas are indeed easier to raise. They dont need daily changes as fry, like the discus, but they couldnt live in a toilet, for long anyhow.

Also, the only cheap bettas are the ones found at petstores.Breeders do get good money for good fish.Browse through the halfmoons on aquabid.Any with a good show breeders name will come with a nice price,at least 30 dollars, plus shipping.Easily reaching over 100,especially those shipped from overseas.

The price of anything is determined by supply and demand. If there's a lot of something, there will always be somebody trying to beat the other guy's price. If there's only a few of something, the person who has them will not want to let them go for less than the best price he can get because more will not be coming quickly. I suspect with discus the length of time before the adults are breeding size and age and getting a breeding pair and the space they need, the kind of food and care they need, and the efforts involved in raising fry all contribute to fewer on the market, while lots of people breed bettas all over the world, hence the different varieties and the fact you see them in every store, while lots of pet stores don't even carry discus and never will.

Discus can live 15+ years. The guppies you get live what, 3 years? You get what you pay for.
