I myself would go with an Aquaclear 110. Or if money isn't an option a canister filter like a Ehiem, Rena or Fluval.

Having more than one filter is also very good. A couple Aquaclear 50's would give you crystal clear water and you would have a backup running if one decided to crap out on you.

I expected to spend 50-60 for a filter, I didn't expect them to be cheap, but I want something effective and also better on money cartridge wise

hi, I'm new here, and recently trying to find a good canister filter ( I want canister due to the fact that the need to clean it is less frequent, I end up with Fluval 305 or Eheim (2215, or 2217) my tank is about 70 gallons, I think I'm going to pick Eheim, but the question is would it be too big to get the eheim 2217 as its designed for 160 gallons aquariums.
maybe the water flow? or the current? thanks in advance for your reply... yeah one last thing... I have mainly discus in my tank

Recently I purchased a Marineland Emperor 400 biowheel filter. It can be found online new for $36 and there is $10 mail in rebate going on until Feb. I think a package of 4 filters for this was $10. It comes with two media cartridges you can fill with whatever you like. I think its rated for up to 90 gallons. I thought it was good deal, I even posted about the day I found it. I can pm you the info on where I bought it and where I found the rebate if you are interested (im not sure on the rules about posting links on here). I havent set it up yet but the reviews were good.

I currently have a 400 and mine is terribly loud. I have an email to support but haven't heard back. I might pick up a couple aquaclear 50s tomorrow if I don't hear from them. It's quite and annoying noise it makes. I may look at Eheims too, I've heard they are dead silent.

i think you will be happy with the 2 aquaclears, itll give you better circulation and they have tons of room in them for you to add extra filter media if you wanted

I love aquaclear! But they do have that waterfall feature, I like it, makes me feel like I'm in a rain forest, but some don't.
