Hi, I am adding an aquarium, and I always look at the tall ones. Pros and cons on getting a long or tall? Thanks so much!

Did I say it is a 20 gallon. I am not sure if it is just the look or space, or fish like one better than the other. Thanks again.

As far as I know the advantage/disadvantage is from a surface area and lighting standpoint. The "long" having greater surface area and therefore better disolved oxygen, probably easier to establish flow and also not needing quite as many lumens of lighting to reach the bottom depending on what you have in mind for the aquarium (coral, clams etc...)

True, the 20 long has a larger surface area to facilitate oxygen/co2 exchange but the 20 high does a better job of displaying the fish. I prefer the high for pure aesthetic reasons. Nowadays we all have access to excellent, inexpensive air pumps which more than makeup for the difference in surface area.

As said most people like the look of the tall better, but the long has more surface area. Other than that, some 'tall' fish like angel fish need a tall tank. Fish that need the room to swim back and forth are better in a long. Unless you plan on getting a fish that really needs the extra inches one way or another it probably really doesn't matter so get the one you like, fits in the space better.

I'm not a tropical fish expert, but I think it may depend on the kind of fish you want to put in our tank. I've read that some fish prefer tall swimming spaces, and some fish prefer wide swimming spaces.I could be wrong though,as I said , I'm no fish expert I just read a lot.
