Hello!
I will start off by saying I know next to nothing about saltwater tanks! But...I found myself with a little 12 gallon nano cube this week. Two hermit crabs came in the tank, and I'm just curious as to their care. Where can I find shells for them to grow in to? Do they need any special food? One of the two likes to hang out at the tallest tip of live rock, the other moves around a lot more. Should I be worried about the little guy? How can I tell what type of hermit crab they are? Right now they are in matching shells of what looks like the saltwater equivalent of a Malaysian Trumpet Snail! Will large bristleworms bother them? Sorry for the huge amount of questions, I'm just trying to learn all I can about the contents of this tank so I don't do anything terribly bad for them! ![]() |

I used to have land hermit crabs and I got extra shells for them from a pet or LFS store. That way I knew they would be safe, (for example shells sold at the dollar store or Wal Mart may not be real or may have been cleaned with a harmful substance).
As for food, they did have some special pellets but I also had to give them fresh fruit and veggies and such. Here's a cool site I found: Hermit Crab Facts and Information - About Saltwater Aquariums Invertebrates Care - Hermit Crab Facts and Information It's got pics of each type of salt water hermit and info' on each species' care. Hope this helps. Good luck and keep us posted! (Pics would be awesome as hermit crabs are adorable!) ![]()

they're really easy to take care of really.. most of the time, mine finish off the food left by the fish. Other times, i feed them some algae pellets.
For shells, just get some that are slightly larger than the ones they have and put them in the tank.. they'll change shells when they want. As for the type of crab.. there are tons.. so just look around the net and see what they match up to.. look at the patterns and colors on their legs. that's the way they are identified usually. |
