Gold Coast Aquarium Society of South Florida - GCAS This forum is for all members and prospective members of the Society to stay in touch. The GCAS is a casual club of freshwater hobbyists of all experience levels who meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. The meetings start with time to mingle, then a quick review of club business, usually followed by a presentation given by a club member or invited speaker, and finally an auction of fish, plants, and products. Usually we have coffee and cookies for refreshments.

From the e-mail received this evening.
This Saturday we are again descending on Wattley's discusautolinker.com autolinking image Hatchery in Miami. We will see beautiful discusautolinker.com autolinking image that will be available for purchase at good prices. Even if you are not interested in these expensive fish, the hatchery itself is quite interesting, and listening Gabriel is the true treat. We will meet at Jimmy's Diner for breakfast at 10AM and hope to get to the hatchery by noon. I am attaching the directions to both.

* Available 2nd Thu 7:30 to 9:30 from Jan 2009 through March 2009
* Room has a 200-person capacity; $15/hr * 2 hours = $30/meeting
* Nonprofit rental rate requires proof of nonprofit status
(bank account statement, etc.) and a letter stating
the purpose of the meetings and the times and dates
requested. Person to contact is Sharon, 954-535-2785,

* Conveniently located close to I-95 - take the Oakland Park exit west, go west to SR7/US441, go north 2-3 blocks to NW 36th St, turn left, and go 1 block west to City Hall.

This location is as close to the exact center of South Florida (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade) as you can get!
I find the Club's handling of the meeting location question rather puzzling. I posted the above on October 1st 2008. Instead of using this facility, the Club went to a Denny's which suffered from numerous fatal defects and was obviously unsuitable. This could have been easily seen in advance by anyone who physically inspected the proposed location. Then, citing the fact that the Denny's was obviously inadequate, the Club went back to repeatedly paying $105 per month at David Park (3.5 times the cost of the Lauderdale Lakes facility, which provides at least double the capacity of David Park in addition to numerous other excellent amenities), without any attempt to actually use the Lauderdale Lakes facility.

Can someone please explain to me the Club's rather mysterious reasoning here?

All for it- hope there's more parking and less mileage from the north- what exit off I-95 south do you take to get there from PB Gardens?
- While I'm at it, I asked at least 4 times now for a member roster- or at least, a list of members from my area so that we can carpool- got a lot of promises but no list- I joined the group in Dec. '08 after trying in vain to get a club started up here thru Craigslist and partnering with another enthusiast.
We love being there but the long stressful ride wipes us out-
Also, the GCAS website needs attention badly- for one thing, the join/contact link is down, and almost everything else needs updating- Dave A.

Take I-95 south to Commercial Blvd, go west to S.R. 7 / US 441, go south to NW 36th ST, go west to the intersection (NW 43rd Ave), continue through the intersection into the City Center. First building on your right is the Alzheimer's Center; second building on your right is the Multipurpose Room (excellent meeting location). The southern approach: Take I-95 north to Oakland Park Blvd., go west to S.R. 7 / US 441, go north to NW 36th ST, go west to the intersection (NW 43rd Ave), continue through the intersection into the City Center.

Where will tomorrow night's meeting be held? Same old place or a new experimental location?
