The GCAS is a casual club of freshwater hobbyists of all experience levels who meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. The meetings start with time to mingle, then a quick review of club business, usually followed by a presentation given by a club member or invited speaker, and finally an auction of fish, plants, and products. Usually we have coffee and cookies for refreshments.

Ok talk the guy today... the plants/shipping will cost 2X the sale price... in other words if the plant list cost is .25 that mean it is .50 shipped... guys it don't get any better than this. You can either order now or pay alot more at the store or even at the club auction for these. I will be ordering over 150.00 myself.

Question Re: Aquairum Plants List

Count me in. I would like to set up a planted tank - so I will need beginner plants LOL. Your choice of plants up to $20 + shipping = $40
I plan on putting Discus & Cardinal Tetras in the tank. The water will be mostly 50/50 mix of RO & Tap water & ph adjusted to 6.5 & kept at 82 F
Here is what I have in equipment for this project.

Please reply with your thoughts.

(1) 30 Gallon Long Tank
(2) Coralife F/W T-5 Aqualight Double Strip Light-36"
w/(1) Colormax F21-T5 BP & (1) 6700K F21-T5 BP bulbs 21 watts each
(1) Perfecto Strip Light with a aquari-lux PL T-8 30 watt bulb
That should give me 114 watts or 3.8 watts per gallon
- should be enough?
(1) 55 oz of Pure Laterite by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals
- probably will only use 1/2 the box unless you think I need more
(25+) Pounds of Estes Natural Walnut gravel from established aquariums
I also could use Vermiculite mixed with dirt from the garden - kind of sandy - this would be the bottom layer with Estes gravel on top
(1) Aqua Clear 70 (300 gph) * or * an Aqua Clear 50 (200 gph)
Which one would you use? I also have an Aqua Clear 150 (150 gph) that I could use, but I think it's a little small for this Tank.
- What are your thoughts?
(1) Small power head that puts out 80 gph to help with circulation for the back corner furthest away from the Aqua Clear.
(1) Nutrafin CO2 Natural Plant System Kit by Hagen
(which is just a store-bought version of the DIY CO2 system that uses a 2-Liter soda bottle) Box says that its for up to 20 Gallon, but it will have to do.
(1) Very tight fitting DIY custom 3/8" thick Polycarbonate hinged Tank cover
(1) 1 oz bottle of Plant Gro Iron Enriched plant fertilizer 0.15-0-0.
- last time I used this stuff I had an algae outbreak like nobody’s business!
(1) 150 watt Heater - clamp on type
(75) Wardley PLANT GROW 75 TABs
That just about covers it, Am I missing anything?

Hey thanks for posting....those are great prices!

I am specifically looking for some foreground plants that will grow in full like short grass. Can you suggest any of those so I can look them up real fast? I was hoping for some more dwarf baby tears or something similar.

For all of you that are not in S. Florida and the plants can not be picked up, you will need to talk to me about getting them. I know people and the shipping that I was talking about was from the supplier to S Florida.

Toms fish room is 30Gal long big enough for cards and discus???? also you dont really need that much light for that size of a tank. do you already own all of this or are planning on getting it??? also if you buy the red sea co2 kit it goes up to 40gal.

Tom,

You have the CO2, over 3w per gallon of lights, and a Laterite base (iron). Unlike laterite, fluorite will last forever so you wouldn't need tabs...just an alternative.

Also instead of Plant Gro, I would seriously look at Seakem's Fluorish and Excel combo. Excel is a plant grower's secret weapon. It makes CO2 out of carbonate and it keeps algae problems to a minimum. If you are really serious about plants I would look at those 2 products and possibly Trace for trace elements. If not at least combine your Plant Gro with the Excel. ;)

I would like to know; what is the easiest foreground (like only an inch or two tall) plant to grow? I would like to redo my 29 gallon tank to be an all-out planted tank; with the right gravel, CO2 'system' (the soda bottle one...) and the right light..... any advice? i would like to order from this offer........

regular gravel, regular lid with a plant light (ancient, probably needs to be replaced) and a few live plants. not one (exept for the floating ones) are fake. planning on deconstructing, saving 50% of the water (and gravel 'junk';) ), changing gravel to plant gravel, and my soda bottle CO2 system. do I need a new light system too? Here's what I have:

anubias on driftwood (water's fine, using coral to equalize...)

swordplant behind krib, leaves won't grow longer; a peice of pennywort between krib and castle

either a small swordplant or a dwarf (not sure), and wisteria

inhabitants: 3 adult mickey mouse red platies, 2 juv. platies, 1 large female lyretail molly, 1 wild male sailfin molly, 2 female guppies, 2 swordtails, 3 male kribs (all fry tuned male!), 2 black skirt tetras (one dyed, never lost strawberry color....), two cardinals, and 2 glass catfish.

what do you think? I don't know much about plants, but want to learn..... are these fish ok in this tank? what kind of groundcover plant can I get (now or after change?)? I plan to rmove the decorations (except for the coral castle) once i have grouncover plants. maybe add some more driftwood....... sorry for all the questions.....:o:o:o

Will you need to get you lighting system first. what you have is fine in the line of plants for the 18watt bulb... if you stay with that light you will need to stay in the low light plants... you gravel is fine for what your doing, you could just add fert tabs to the roots system and add liquid ferts. If you want you could layer your exsisting gravel or a plant sub a save a few dollars but still give yourself 4 inchies of sub. As far as CO2 system red seas yeast system that less of a mess than the DIY systems. I won't do anything until you get the lighting taken care of, no ned to add CO2 yeast system until you have a heavy load in the tank, for now seachem excel will put enough Co2 into the water if you start to use liquid ferts. 29 gal is a good tank to start a planted tank with.

Danny cichlids and plants dont go very well i guess if you were using plants try the onion plants but the cichlids like to move the gravel around and thats not good for plants. also i told you before in the meetings the reason your plants arent growing is because you dont have enough lift on your tank. on a 29 gal you need around 73 wats for the tank that will give you around 2.5 wats per gallon. which is good for that size. also if you going to plant get rid of all the decor imo. except for the DW. also that small of a tank becareful about the CO2 and light combo. if you dont have enough plants and too much of the other two youll get algae outbreak. 29 gall shouldnt be too bad to plant as far as expenses. do your research ask questions and read a lot. look up the plants on Richie's list. there are some good ones one there which are perfect for beginners.
