I placed some Xenia on one side of my 29g thinking they would look nice. Now they are growing too fast. Have asked my lfs and they tell me to keep trimming it. Tried that but they are really sliipery to grab and some pieces float away. Afraid they may plant elsewhere. Is there any other method to keep them in check? Can they outgrow the rest of my tank? I like the look but just don't want them everywhere.

I was going to plant some of those but a friend warned me about them taking over. i don't know what you can use other than some coral eating fish. Don't know any off hand but you might google it.

only ways really is to either make their habitat slighly less habitable for them.. they like dirty-ish water, so make sure its pristine. Otherwise, trimming is the other method. also!, You can also put them on their own rock and if they dont have anywhere else to spread, then they wont. They'll just get longer. When you trim them, trim large sections of them. I've been lucky so far with mine and when i get really good water periods in my tank, they almost die off and it takes a few weeks to come back. lol. dont know how exactly i do it, but i do.

Hi,
Xenia likes to climb, turn the rock over and let them climb the other direction. This will give them something to do instead of streach to another rock. Xenia likes dirty water quality (nitrates) and feed on it, which is a good thing. As long as nitrates stay around 20. If you get rid of your nitrates by having better water quality....requires more often water changes, the xenia will die off. |
