Default Re: spider web looking growth

This spider web like growth, is not harmful, albeit unsightly. It is most likely, from your discription coming from what would at first appear to be a tube worm. It is really a type of snail that cements its self in place and never moves again. It sends out a mucus string that is very sticky to catch detritus an other various plankton. They readily reproduce in the aquarium. If they really bother you now is the time to act. Follow the string to its base and look for a small tube. Just crush this little snail and it will kill it. Be careful as I have cut myself many times hadling rock full of these at time. They are very sharp.
