Default New nano reef

Just Put together my 10 gallon nano today and I was wondering when I can start putting in soft corals? And how do I adjust the gravity in the tank? And when to add fish? Thanks a bunch

Very nice congrats. What lights did you get? Most coral require very good lighting. How much live sand/live rock did you use?

ah that's cool are they HO lights? Was the live sand the instant cycle stuff? If not you should wait about a month.

You should wait until that live rock has a die off, it cures, and the tank cycles before you put anything in there. Keep a watch on your ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites to watch for the cycle ending. You should see the rock turn a brownish color and flake off dead stuff. After that, it'll start building the bacteria up while it consumes it.

You adjust the specific gravity by adding salt (premixed and airated) to bring it up or by adding purified (RO for example) water to bring it down.

As soon as your tank is fully cycled, you can add SOME types of fish. I say some because some fish require an established tank with algae and/or small lifeforms called copopods. You may also add some easy corals like mushrooms or xenia.

After about a few weeks of your tank being fully cycled, you'll be able to start building your corals. You need to make sure you keep the calcium and magnesium to good levels, and your phosphates and nitrates down. This can be done by weekly water changes.

FYI, if you dont add the live rock now, you'll have to wait another few weeks for the new live rock to cycle and cure before you put in fish or coral.

One other thing, if you purchase a clear HOB filter, you can fill it with live rock, sand, and macro-algae to have a nano-refugium. This will help keep your nitrates and phosphates down.

Good luck! if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
