Hi All-
I purchased a 6 gallon Fluval Edge about a month ago. Started by doign the recommended water adjustments, let it sit for a week and began to add fish. I added 3 tetras to start. They were doing well until this week when all but one have died. I have not done a water test, plan to take some in this week. The only thing I can tell during the water changes and whatnot is that there is a slime over most of the decor in the tank and I have never been able to get the water clear at all. So here are my questions. I wanted to go to a more less maintenance tank with a little hardier fish than the tetras. I had honestly thought about making it into a shrimp tank and maybe put in a frog and a snail? Stay away from the fish completely. Thoughts?? Anythign I need to know about making an aquarium into a shrimp tank?? Any other options on fish to keep in there. Maybe a single fish (thought about betta but I know the issue with the small opening and them breathing air). any other thoughts on what to do with the tank besides sell it or put it in a closet ![]() |

The tank needs to cycle and that can take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks. There is an article on cycling on this forum. There is also the beaslbob method which would take a lot of fast growing plants, you can find that here also in the forums.

Shrimp are a tad harder than fish IMO, Live plants will make your live easier. In the Edge just grab some small anubias maybe a java fern.

So would you recomend gutting the tank...cleaning it, then starting over with plants and just let it sit for a while?

I cycle with fish, zebra danios/ glo fish are awsome. Just do water changes through the cycle, once the tank is established then it will be low maintence. Also look into a better substrate that you wont have to vaccume. I use carrib sea eco complete.
