Default Filtration Question

I've read that its best to take all the filter media out of your HOB filter and just add more live rock. Wouldnt the bio media that comes with those filters become like live rock? after all it is like small rocks. Im using a aquaclear 70 on a 20 gal nano right now and it comes with a small bag of bio media. Just curious..I do use the sponge that comes with it when I do my water changes to collect debri. If the bio media would help Id like to put it back in.

Thanks

I wouldn't even put in the rubble, because in time it to will cause you Nitrate issues from gathering detrius in it. I would only use a filter (HOB) to put in GFO or Carbon. Other than that its not needed.

Yeah I know its not needed. I was just debating the issue on the bio media in that would it become like live rock over time (not bio balls but the ceramic kind).

Even the live rock will catch crap in it over time. Live Rubble is better left to the sump area. You can throw it in just to see what it will do, then over 6-9 months if, or when your Nitrates start to go up and you can't find anything else wrong in the tank, pull out the filter with the media, whichever may be in it. You can experiment, it won't hurt anything, just watch those Trates, I would not let em rise above 40-50.
