Default about to start a nano reef

Ok I'm a freshwater person and have two freshwater tanks but i am clueless to what all Is need for a reef tank. What all is needed for startup. It's gonna be a 27 gallon cube that petsmart has. What all will I need to have before I fill it and start the establishing process and when do I need to add the live rock? Also what filtration wise will it need, I know some media is different for saltwater. Any suggestions or tips will be a major help.

Hi and welcome to the saltwater hobby.

First! You need to come up with your tank's personality. This means what will you have in the tank. For ex- fish only with live rock, soft coral, or hard coral.
Knowing your tank's personality will save you money in the long run.

If you want to get it hard plumbed, do it now. otherwise you will have the option to use an overflow, a hang on filter, or a canister filter.
second, grab a protein skimmer(for your tank, it will cost around 40 dollars for a simple counter current skimmer)
If having a sump or a refugium is out of the question, I would just recommend in having a canister filter with a protein skimmer hanging on the back.
If you are placing coral, you will need liquid calcium, iodide, etc.
You will also need some good lighting(LED or compact fluorescent recommended for a cube.)

RODI water is a must!!!!!
It will save you trouble in the long run. trust me! If you dont have or cant get some from you LFS, just use distilled water from a local grocery store.

Things needed to start up:
Filter
p. skimmer
lighting
35 gallons of RO water(27 for the tank, 1 gallon for the filter and protein skimmer, the rest for top off)
salt(choose the right brand and type for your tank and stick with it)
hydrometer or refractometer
substrate
Dry rock(recommended over live rock to start up with)
saltwater test kit that tests for ammonia, ph, nitrite, nitrate, etc
elemental test kit(if reef setup) which tests for calcium, and other elements
power heads or circulation pumps
heater

It might sound expensive but it pays for itself in the long run.
