There are certain drill bits you can buy to go through glass, but it is hard to do. maybe someone else has a better idea.

I have NOT done this to a tank (FW person so far) but I have drilled glass before. There is a glass/tile drill bit you can get from home improvement stores. It needs to be very steady, because it will _really_ want to skate across glass. I used my drill press to do it. The biggest trick is to have a squirt bottle of water in one hand, running water onto the drill bit the whole time, and to only do a little bit at a time, after a half second, pull back and give the bit and glass time to cool, while running water. Also run the drill at a very slow speed. I can set the speed on my drill press and I went to the lowest.

It is very, very messy and you will have a lot of glass slush left-over. Be sure you get all that out.. can't be good for fishies.

IMHO you would almost have to have a benchtop drill press, but people can be creative, so perhaps you could make a jig for a hand-drill. If you do it too fast, or without the water the glass will crack.

Also, I should mention I don't know if any of this applies to acrylic.

Good luck!

You can drill non-tempered glass with a carbide hole saw. Check out u-tube for how to video's. Your other option is to take it to a glass shop that has the right size hole saw and let them drill it for you. You'll wind up paying nearly the same either way.

To start the hole stick a bit of masking tape on the glass where you want to drill, it stops the bit from sliding around.
