I have a new 75 gallon aquarium and a good 29 gallon aquarium. I am going to use the 29 gallon as a filtration system for the 75 gallon. This will be a salt water setup.
I am not sure how much live rock I will need, if any, with this filter setup. In the 29 gallon, the water will first go into a chamber that has detrius filtration on top of carbon filtration. That chamber will be about 4 to 6 inches wide. The divider will be 1 inch from the top and 1 inch from the bottom with the water flowing into the 2nd chamber through the bottom. The 1 inch top gap is for overflow just in case. I would rather bypass the filter into the next chamber rather than onto the floor. The second chamber would hold the protein skimmer and the heater. This chamber will probably be about 6 inches wide. The divider into the next chamber would be exclusively at the top, It would feed onto a trickle plate that covers a chamber filled with natural sponges. This chamber would be as wide as possible and still allow room for the final chamber for the return pump. I have to have a submersible pump. I am not going to get into drilling holes in aquariums. I already broke one 75 gallon aquarium this week. I don't need to break any more. Any experts see any problems with this setup? I am not keeping any coral or invertabrates by the way. Just fish, and maybe live rock. I do have a siphon overflow design that will start and stop on demand. Will not drain the tank, and will always start after a power failure. Unless of course, the power is off so long all the water evaporates, but since I am on a generator backup system, the longest I might be without power is a few hours. Right now I am building the aquarium stand. Then I will start setting up the tank and buying or building the things I need for this filtrations system. |

Live Rock should still be, in your case FOWLR, 1.5lbs per gallon. As your not using your sump as a Fuge. Tough to call if your design is a good one, from what I can gather though, it seems sound.
