I have a 55g tank with a wet dry trickle filter and a bunch of live rock that recently suffered from ich that killed all of my fish. My protein skimmer recently broke and I was wondering if I needed a new one to restock.

You don't NEED one if you keep up with weekly water changes. However, it depends on how big your bioload is. I would say try it out without a skimmer for a while and see how it goes! I don't have a skimmer on any of my salt water tanks and I keep coral
