Default New Fluval question

I was wondering how terrible it is to change to a new filter? I am currently using a submersible kinda crumby filter. I just bought a new canister filter to replace it with then started wondering if I should cycle it first and if so how? The one I'm using now just uses foam so I'm not sure how effective it has been other than just getting grime out. The new filter is a Fluval 205 and it seems it will need about 2 gallons just to fill it which means new water which is quite a bit for a 10 gallon nano. Quick feed back appreciated.

You could run both for about a week then remove the old one. It'll be fine, theres still a lot of bacteria in the substrate.

ok thanks for that. Turning it on I only added one gallon of new water (mixed salt of course) into the new filter and filled the rest with aquarium water.

So I just got a new fluval 350 for my 72 gallon but question is, how long should I let my HOB filter run before the tank will be ok with the switch?

My fluval 404 just bit the dust. The blue handle broke. And, I noticed that the impeller assembly is worn away at the top and the white ceramic shaft is broken.
