Question Filter Questions

Hey all,
So I've recently been working with two large (1000g) tanks that were built by an outside contractor. They were designed several years ago for keeping fish, but now I'm using them to hold large numbers of blue crabs. My question is about the filtration setup.
Each tank has two drains. One (at the bottom of the tank) goes to the suspended solids filter. The other (a standpipe opening about 2ft off the bottom of the tank) goes to a clarifier and then to the biofilter. The water then recombines and is pumped back into the tanks.
This seems inefficient to me. Shouldn't there be only one filtration system - thereby ensuring that the water passes through all three filters before being returned to the tanks?
Additionally - is a SS filter a sufficient substitute for a protein skimmer?

Any ideas would be helpful.

I'd suggest that you talk to Chris Kadletz at the Florida Gulfarium.

Aquafarm at Florida's Gulfarium

He can probably help you figure it out.
