Was feeding some shrimp pellets tonight and watching them sink to the bottom and my Cory's going after them and thought one was stuck on the wall..... got to looking closer and it's a dad-gummed snail !!!
After finding him and and looking all in and around the tank, I found another one. Now just where the heck did they come from ? The first one I found is tiny, maybe the size of a kids BB gun's BB, the other one smaller than that. Are they worth keeping ? I've heard they'll breed like rats and take over a tank...... ? ? ? |

If you have live plants, they came from one of those. And yes they will breed constantly, I have first hand experience.

You can set up a snail trap by using a water bottle with zucchini in it or something like that. Then just toss what is eating off of it.

I personally don't mind having snails. They clean up leftover food and most would at least nibble on algae. Best of all, some don't bother healthy plants at all (Malaysian Trumpet Snails are really great for planted tanks). I think they're cute so I like 'em. Just make sure you can keep the population under control. Trapping them like suggested should work very well.

When I switched tanks from where I first found them, I did that... used new gravel and rinsed all decorations..... I'll be danged if I haven't found 3 more now in the new tank. To me, they make my skin crawl worse than seeing a tick.....
How are they on the plants ? Is there eggs or something because I had the plants in the original tank for over a month before I saw the first one, then they just kept appearing, and now after the tank move, they're coming back again. |

I wouldn't recommend getting Clown Loaches. They should be kept in groups and they do get big.
Either pick them out by hand, catch them in a water bottle trap or on a piece of veggie, or just leave 'em. (Assassin Snails work nicely as well.)

Well, right after posting awhile ago, I got a flashlight and shined it into a piece of a fake log I have in the tank and could see 4-5 stuck to the inside of this log. Got mad and took everything out of the tank (except the few plants and fish) and put them in the sink and soaked them in boiling water for about 20 minutes. Just got finished putting the tank back together and re-arranged it a little to where I can grab these pieces out easier in the future and boil them again if I have to....... I'm determined to eventually win this infestation of vermin..... LOL

They come as eggs on the plants, and from every store. I'm no fan of petco, but snails grow on plants grown outdoors, and killing them industrially can damage the plants. Every store has them, and 'how to' aquarium books usually tell you how to 'de-snail' snail plants before you put them in your tanks.
You, my friend, have snails. You will have them for a long time. I hate the little beasts, and pick out every one I can find with every water change. Look for the egg casing - gelatinous goo lumps attached to the glass or other hard surfaces. Siphoning them up is a start, but there will always be more... and more... and more. Death, taxes and snails... |

Yoyo loaches should be kept in a group and will grow to be a few inches, so unless you have a big enough tank, I wouldn't suggest getting a 'snail eating fish.'

Id try to relax over the whole little snail thing it really is not all that uncommon and by taking over a tank that simply means that when you see some you can grab, grab em and they will never take over. Its really not that big a deal to be rippping things apart....before you know it you'll have a big old bacteria bloom that can last for weeks over just a few snails. Again it is not that uncommon. Nor all that dangerous. They are not cockroaches!

I always get an initial snail bloom. but then a year later there are only a few left. So IMHO just do nothing. Meanwhile they are cleaning the tank and providing food for the fish (eggs and snails also). my .02
