If it was properly cycled before adding any fish then it's best to actually add in all the fish you plan to have - your tank is well suited to handling the high bioload and not adding a lot of fish initially would actually cause a lot of the bacteria and such to die off in a relatively short time so that any subsequent additions would have to be limited to just a few fish.
However if you already have fish, or didn't do a fishless cycle beforehand, then you want to take it slower and add a few at a time. It's better in this case to add a few of the same species and wait a couple weeks before adding more so the tank can adjust. I'd like to note, however, that adding all the fish at once is quite stressful for the fish but it can be done if you don't expect any compatibility or aggression issues. If you're unsure about this, then maybe add half of the fish you plan to have (i.e. a school of the same species)? This is a good option as well because if there are any problems with the fish or the water you won't be as likely to lose as many fish.

What size is your tank?
It's best to stock a tank at 80% max than to stock it completely full. It's better for the fish and also doesn't stress the bioload of the filter. What's your filtration like? Having more filtration than needed always helps. For instance, if you have a 20g tank, put a filter that is for a 40g tank on. The cleaner the water, the healthier the fish. Extra filtration also helps if you happen to be heavily stocked. And, like Rhokey said, it all depends on if the tank has been through the Nitrogen Cycle. If you cycled the tank with fish, you will have to add just 2 fish at a time, waiting a week or two in between so you don't start the tank cycling again. If you did a fishless cycle, the tank has been primed to handle a higher bioload, so you can add more fish at first. (I still wouldn't add them all at once, but you could add most.) Then wait until things settle, and then add the last few.

You can have as many as will fit!:D Kidding. Really it depends on the tank and the amount of maintenance you're willing to do. I've had my tank overstocked before, and it was stable and everyone was healthy, but it took a lot of work. Personally, I'd go with what Susan recommended with 80% stocking. What that is specifically, depends on a lot of factors.

I went with silent cycle with lots of plants. I started with a school of 7 lemon tetras, a week later, added 6 oto catfish, a week later put in 11 amano shrimp and a mystery snail. Right now, my lemons are so happy they're spawining like crazy, so I have several fry of various ages. Tested my water today and the numbers were Am 0, Ni 0, Na 20 and pH is 7.2. I have a 20 gallon long

Ah that question we all ask at some time, how many fish, such a simple question, such a difficult answer. It depends, what fish, what filter, how much work do you want, is it planted, how big will the fish get, are they compatible, will they breed quickly (beware the guppy). These are all factors for consideration.

There's a helpful calculator here AqAdvisor - Intelligent Freshwater Tropical Fish Aquarium Stocking Calculator and Aquarium Tank/Filter Advisor
It allows you to put in all your variables. It will not tell you how quickly to stock but will advise on the total stocking limit. |

Warning: Aqua Advisor is just a 'tool'!!! It is NOT going to give you the exact correct answers! You need to use common sense and research your fish! Yes, it is a good starting point, but don't take the results it gives you as 100% correct!!!
Very often, Aqua Advisor is wrong, so please, please, please - research the ADULT size of any fish you are looking at, if they need to be in a school, if you have the right size tank for them, if you have the right amount of filtration for them and if you have the right tank mates for them!!!
