Red face UV Sterilizer again

I came across Lifegard Aquatics UV sterilizer Model QL - 25 rated to up to 760 g/h + pump Surge 3500 cheap and because I just went through the ich cure, I am very interested. Is it overkill for my 55 gallon freshwater tank and is there anything else I need to know before I decide to go for it? I am going to upgrade to some kind of canister filter soon if that is important.

I have that model on one of my 125g tanks. Although it is a good model, I'd advise against it. I've been looking at the Gamma units. They seem to be pretty good from what I've read. They can help prevent ich, but it won't be 100%. The LA brand is very large and although it wasn't too hard to rig/mount, it was a pain in the butt.

Can overkill, in a harmful way, happen? Is that something to be concerned about?

Overkill can be hit if the wattage is so high on your unit it is causing it to heat the water. Some units may not experience that no matter how high, but some can.

If you want to get a uv for a 55 I would suggest maybe a 9 watt, works slower and you don't want it to move fast to kill stuff.

Just when I thought UV Sterilizer may not be necessary and gave up on it, I found these canister filters with built-in UV sterilizers. They are very affordable and can be found on ebay ($60-$80 plus shipping). UV part has it's own switch and can be turned off. Models without UV are $30-$50 plus shipping. I found several reviews online and they are very positive. I also found that some big canister filter manufacturers make their stuff in SunSun company, but that may not be the truth. People that have them say they are very similar to Marineland C-series and that should be a good thing.

Just be careful, finding replacement parts for a Chinese filter may be a difficult task.
