I've spent the last week packing my clothes, shoes, miscellaneous objects and whatnot for the trip back to college. I was sitting in the kitchen to take a break from the packing when I looked over at my tank, betta and tankmates swimming happily around, when I thought, "CRAP!!" So here I am.
The last four times I've had to make the seven-to-eight-hour trip to or from campus, I've had a small 2.5-gallon plastic tank with two to three small fish. I recently upgraded back to a glass 5-gallon tank with a male betta, two cloud minnows, and a danio. With the plastic tank, I would empty out 60% of the water and just hold it on my lap for the e.n.t.i.r.e. drive. This time, I have to be on campus a week early and my parents have to take my truck and what I couldn't initially take with me, including the fish tank, up a few days later. Because of this, the tank won't be able to be held on anyone's lap. What should I do? The truck I have is a Nissan Frontier so it could only go in the passenger seat or on the bench seat (Florida is entirely too hot to put a tank in the bed for seven hours). I have artificial plants so plant shock won't be an issue. All the other posts I found were for shorter trips or for shipping fish =[ Does anyone have any suggestions?

Get a styrofoam cooler and some fish bags from the pet store. You need two per fish.Ill add photos of the process of bagging, but initially you double bag them and place them in the cooler with shredded newspaper or styro peanuts for the trip.
Ill get the pics up as soon as I eat and do some running.

Or you can also put some tank water in the cooler, add fish and a battery powered filter that plugs into a cigarette lighter. You can get those at bait shops and also in the sporting goods dept at a walmart. They also have some that are powered by their own battery pack. Put the lid on it and set it in the floorboard of the passenger side.

Be careful when you do the trip, there's a tropical storm that might roll by and make the driving a bit more scary. Good luck with the move.

I've moved fish by bagging them and putting in a cooler bag and it worked fine. It's a bit of work to do but I was surprised by how little stressed the fish were. I think it's better not to feed for 24hrs before to help keep the water clean.

Yeah it'll be rolling through, but hopefully it'll be a whole lot of nothing... Thank you!

Thats a great idea!I never did get the time to take them pics for you, sorry.I will if you still need them, just let me know.I keep forgetting many people have fish who get along, lol. If I placed all my fish in one thing for the move,I wouldnt have any left they would kill each other.

I made a 15 gallon tank leak by moving it without emptying all the water out but I think you will be fine with a 5 gal. You'd probably be best to empty half the water out of the tank to put less stress on the tank and prevent splashing and cover it to make it darker so the fish gets less stressed.
