I bought a 46g Bowfront tank from a guy who had it set up as a salt water tank. It's been sitting dry for about a year. I cleaned everything up pretty good. This stone I soaked, cleaned with viniger, soaked, scrubed and repeated. I got a really really good cleaning and long soakings... I put it in the tank today and all of a sudden, white stuff starts flaking off? Could it be dried salt deposits for him? Why didn't it flake in all the soakings I did berfore? I even scrubbed it with a plastic hand brush...
I obviously took it out...Do I just throw it away now? I can't seem to clean it, I've tried and who would want something that flakes off in their tank? See all the white deposits on it? I circled some for you to see...That's what's flaking off into the tank. |

I'm no geologist, but that looks like limestone. In which case, your KH will be astronomical. Do you have a testing kit for KH (carbonate hardness/alkalinity)?

Naw had one of those myself. Soak in a lot of vinegar and water for a couple hours then take a wire brush to it.
