So the other day I brought home some new fish and have been acclimating them into the tank and everything went normal and they are all playing nice but I woke up this morning and they all are swimming very close to the surface, even my angel which rarely even comes near the surface. Nothing looks wrong it's just weird seeing them all up at the top, any ideas why they would be doing this?

Is the tank cycled? How long has it been set up? How many fish did you add at once, and have you tested the tank params?

How long has the tank had fish in it? What's the size? What are your readings for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate?

I would do a 50% water change immediately, and add an airstone if you don't have one already. Sometimes they go to the surface to get oxygen. Sometimes they go to the surface because there's something wrong with the water. Either way, try to keep them from dying first, then figure out what's wrong.

Ok I did more testing and my ph was low so I got a chemical to treat it and now all my levels are perfect. I was thinking it was a lack of air too, though there has been no issues like this since I bought the tank it's only used the filter for air, I did find a small pump and air stone to put in there around my house and now things are much better, everything is back to normal

Check your heater doesn't get stuck on, I need to use an air stone in the summer (I live in a hot climate) because warm water doesn't hold as much oxygen.
PH chemicals are usually a really bad idea because they are very unstable. How low is you PH? Is it a lot lower than normal? If PH is a problem look into other ways of maintaining PH, like adding crushed shell to you substrate or filter media. PH drops can be a result of decaying organic material and lack of water changes or not enough "buffering" in the water (the crushed shell does that). Also is it a planted tank? Earth substrates can cause problems that lead to fish gasping at the top, but that's only if you have an earth or other organic based substrate (especially a DIY one), or possibly fine sand. |
