Default Snails: I finally found an answer to how to keep my snails alive

Yesterday, I went to a local pet store (small business) to buy a few fish. I talked to the owner about the fact that I could not seem to keep snails alive. She told me that if you keep your tank really clean and no algae grows, they starve. She told me to put a cucumber slice in the tank to feed the snails. My snail crawled up and attached himself to that slice and fell to the bottom of the tank with it. He ate on it for quite a while. I was told by someone on this forum that a cuttle bone provides the calcium that they need for their shells so I am doing that too.

I just wanted to share this! I think I might have a snail that lives now!

If anyone has any comments about this I would welcome them.

I just set up a 10 gallon lightly planted tank and one of my plants came with some snails (Thanks Summer! :D) I haven't fed them anything and they are still doing quite well.

Snails don't like soft, acid water; they die. Put in some seashells or coral sand to increase your water's hardness and ph. You can also add a little Rift Lake Cichlid Salt. The water here is soft and acid and the local Big Box store kept losing their Mystery Snails. I finally talked them into increasing their Snail tank's ph and hardness. The snails now stay alive.
