Default snails, corys???

2 questions...
what would be more beneficial in a freshwater fancy goldfish tank..?? i currently have 8 Nerites but looking to add more or some catfish...

2nd question... if u are "borderline" overstocked... would adding more snails or corys be a bad idea? or no because they are small anyways..?? THANKS!

If you are any kind of over stocked, adding anything is a bad idea!

How big is your tank and how many goldfish do you have? 1 goldfish needs 30gallons and then an extra 10gallons are needed per goldfish after that. You also need double filtration on a goldie tank as they are super messy fish as well as large weekly partial water changes.

Corys are out, as they need warm water, whereas goldfish are cold water fish.... IF you get a tank that is suitable to house your fish (ex: is big enough for the goldfish) then you could get a school of White Cloud Mountain Minnows, as they are cooler water fish.

Nice to see a fellow Canadian on the site! I'm about 30mins North of you! :D

lol! well i was told 20gal for one and then 10 each after that.. i have 4 goldies in a 46 gallon. i do water changes every 3rd day anyways... water seems fine. and goldies happy! i have the marineland c360 which is a filter rated for up to 100GAL.. so i dont think i need a double filter..??

WHITE CLOUD MINNOWS?? what are they good for?? or are they just regular fish??

whereabouts?

20g for the first goldie and then 10gal for everyone after is acceptable. So... you are 4gals short of 50gals, lol.

Your filter sounds fine. And kudos to you for the vigilant water changes! :D

The Mountain Minnows are just a schooling/shoaling fish... fun to look at... don't really do much..... I don't know if there is a catfish that can be in cold water.... you may be best to just stick with the snails.

68-72 degrees (20-22 degrees) is the norm for gold fish... 72-84 degrees (22-29 degrees) is what Bushy (or Bristle) Nose Plecos can be kept at... so you're hitting the bare minimum of what that catfish can handle. BN Plecos only reach 5-6" tops. They do scavenge a bit, but if you are looking for something to "clean" the tank, maybe try feeding less.... or keep the nerites. Plecos are very messy fish, and since you are already boarderline overstocked, I wouldn't risk adding another fish.

With your filtration and water changes you should be able to add the minnows just fine.

I agree with Susan. Since you have massive filtration, getting a school/shoal (5-6 or so) should be fine. Just keep up with your water changes and you're golden. Enjoy your new feeeeeesh! Post pics when you get them!

P.S. the Pleco's I mentioned stay about 5-6" and are very gentle on plants, but I can see why you wouldn't want one since they are very messy fish. To each, his own I guess, lol.

Oh, and I'm in the Stouffville/Newmarket area. You? Downtown or GTA?
