Ok this is just a question i have been wondering but cant come up with or find any good answers. I have a 20 gal with 2 black fin tetras, male and female (baby) swordtail, guppy, 2 blackline rasboras, 3 neon tetras and a glowlight tetra. To me they are of regular size in which most sights state they will get to give or take. When ever i have to go to walmart to get food i stop over at the fish isle just to see what they have going (not to buy) and notice their guppies, black fins, neons and glowlights are a bit bigger than what i have. I have had most of these guys since the end of summer and just curious as my tank is bigger than their holding tanks but the fish dont compare in size..
just curious.. |

Define "regular size"? From what I recall off the top of my head, most swords, mollies and tetras can get up to 2"-4".

I cant comment on the sword as i never see them at walmart as i go there all the time for food. But my BFT are about 1.5 inches long, neons about an inch or just under, guppy tail and all about 1.125 or so.

They will double in size, or come close to it. However, after a certain length (I'm not sure), their growth rate slows down. Also keep in mine if the tank is not big enough their skeletons will become stunted but their organs will continue to grow, resulting in a very slow and painful death.

If you want your fish to grow, you need to feed them high quality live frozen and pelleted foods, and do alot of water changes.

They do not need live food to grow large, or at all. A high quality pellet food is all that is needed. I only feed and recommend New Life Spectrum exclusively.
In order for fish to grow well and be healthy they need high quality food and water. That means good food and lots of water changes. Other than that it will just take time.
