Been out of this for about 25 or so years. I'm just about done with my 29 gal planted Tetra tank. Was in the fish store last night and they had some Silver Dollar's. That brought back some memories as they were one of my favorite fish.
So my next tank I would like atlest 5 of them. I'm guessing I should go 55 gal (thats the max I can go for now) I think anything else would be to small for 5? I know I can't have live plants. Throw out some suggestiong for tank mates and decore. I'm up for ideals right now.

some bristlenose plecostomous, cory cats, rainbow fish, or some types of catfish would be good with the silver dollars.

In a 55 you will have to stick to the smallest species of silver dollars. The smallest species I see with any regularity in the hobby are spotted silver dollars which max out at around 4". These are my favorites anyways because they have some color to them. They have some light black spots and when in good condition the males will have some red on their chest and some other color. A school of five or six would be fine in a 55, if the tank has a good water change schedule.
I have talked to one or two people who were able to have plants with them. I think the idea is the same as my planted goldfish tank. I only feed New Life Spectrum which provides everything they need, so they don't have a craving for the plants. Other fish are your decision. It really comes down to mouth size, if a fish can fit in another fish's mouth, it will probably end up there. Maintenance fish are an essential in any tank IMO. You can do some cories and/or loaches for food cleanup. For algae control you have the usuals, bristlenose plecos, SAEs, etc. Can you do a larger four foot tank, like a 75? That would be better than just a 55.

Going to pick up a 55 tomorrow. Petco has a sale $1.00 per gallon.
Silver Dollars and hatchet's will be going in. Possibly a Black Ghost. Looking for sugestions on tankmates and Aquscape. Going to Carolinas at the end of week so hopeully I will find some cool rocks and driftwood. Don't think plants can survive the silverdollars. This is what I was thinking but need to add a little more. Or possibly change to something else. ![]()

I prefer Estes Marine Sand. I have talked to someone who had plants with their silver dollars. They did what I do with goldfish, feed New Life Spectrum exclusively so they get everything they need from the food and don't have a high drive for the plants.
