Hey all
I have an idea i want to try out... well i actually have seen it done, but not sure how.. I want to keep a siamese fighting fish in and over sized champagne glass ( a novelty type glass) on my desk at work! How would i go about this? It will be a stand alone type thing.. so not filter or air pump! Can this be done? with a lil gravel in the bottom?? |

NO, it should not be done. Siamese fighting fish are normally kept in much to small spaces. If you want it to do good and look its best keep in a proper tank like a 20G community. Or probably better a 5G species tank trust me. I used to have a siamese fighter in a 20G with only 3 kuhli loaches and he did great. The only reason people think itès okay is because in their home country they have been found in puddles OMG. Anyways a novelty champaigne glass is not a proper home.
PS. Nor, are bowls.

In order for people to understand a little about this mis understood fish, much research needs to be done. Please pardon me while I rant a little history on this fish.
Betta Splendens,or Siamese fighting fish hail from the vast rice paddies in Thailand. The little mud colored fish would be picked up by young farmers and taken home and trained. Then the following week a few workers would get together and fight the little fishes they caught. The winner was kept while the loser was set free. Some people then decided it best to breed the toughest fighters and come out with ultimate fighting machines, hence the four star plakats we see nowadays. The long finned bettas, are a product of breeding and many of them cannot handle currents because the finnage. However,if kept in very small spaces, they do most of nothing, and will become stressed or bored and wither away. The proper setup for one of these fish would be at the very least five gallons so they can be cycled. The splendens of today are a mixture of several different fish in the complex, including Imbellis, mahachai and Smaragdinas. They prefer a tannin stained environment with live plants and driftwood. Since they come from a tropical home, the ideal temperature would be between 82-84 degrees, and providing them with a clean, heated, cycled and spacious home, they will show the activeness and personality that make them a favorite in the hobby. Also a tight fitting cover is a plus,as they do jump. So in short answer,no,you cannot keep one in a champagne glass, and have him lead a healthy active lifestyle. ***NOTE:I DO NOT ENCOURAGE OR CONDONE FIGHTING THESE FISH,BUT THIS IS PART OF THE HISTORY AND IT NEEDS TO BE STATED TO UNDERSTAND A LITTLE ABOUT THEM***
