So I have my 10" bala and 12" iridescent, 5" blood parrot in a tank. I add 6 gourami's @2" each. My bala and iridescent are lazy. they just kind of lay around and are rarely active, but they're healthy and eat regularly. But the gourami's seem petrified of them, they hide up in the back corner next to the powerhead and pump intake. I've sat for hours watching the fish, there was never any aggression. Hopefully when the gourami's get a little bigger they'll stop wimping out up there.

Well, you've got fish in your aquarium that are roughly 5 times the size of your gouramis, so of course they're going to be scared of them.

but it's a big tank... and the wee blood parrot harrasses the sharks. not agressively but bumps them, pushes them out of the way, etc.

Doesn't matter how big the tank is, they think they're in danger. Whether it's true or not is moot.

damn. that is not working out as intended. the 125 is vastly understocked with just the 3 fish, and the gourami's were pretty. i guess i need another tank for the gourami's to grow out.

Well, your iridescent shark will outgrow that tank in short order anyway.

Hmm... I had read that in captivity they only got to around 14". Received the same info from LFS. So I got bad info then?

I've got one in my store that's around 30" in length right now, and still growing.

Hmm... I feel like at that size they're not really suited for home aquariums.

They're a member of a small group of fish that I do not sell in my store (he was brought in years and years ago before I got there, and has been there ever since), that includes Iridescent Sharks, Pacu, Alligator Gars, and Redtail Catfish. They all get far too large for home aquariums.
Just because they get too large however doesn't stop people from buying/selling them.

So maybe rehoming him is the best idea. I don't want to though, he came in injured, huge gash on his face and his one eye looked like it was gonna fall off. i thought he wasn't going to make it, but he pulled through and is completely healed now.

Ours has a dent on the side of his head you could put your thumb in, but he does fine. It's because they're large, nervous fish that flee at the slightest provocation, which usually ends with them smashing into something with great force and hurting themselves.

He is rather skittish, when I first got him he couldn't sit still. However now he has found a nice place to lay where he spends a lot of his time. He no longer freaks out when I walk into the room either.

Are these Dwarf Gouramis?
That large of fish I wouldn't necessarily say that tank is "vastly" understocked. I have 2-125s and cannot imagine fish in it that size. |

Blue gourami's, 6-8" they said. I say vastly because the blood parrot spends most of his time in the tree, the iridescent spends his time next to a rock in the dark corner, with only the bala hanging out, so it looks like a one fish tank, assuming the bala is out.
