Unhappy schooling question

Okay, I keep wondering about this and keep forgetting to ask.

I have two angels and one pearl gourami. Their tank mates are Barbs. I know barbs aren't the recommended tank mates unless you have enough barbs to school therefore keeping to themselves - hopefully.

If I have two tiger barbs and two albino tiger barbs and three green tiger barbs, could that be considered one school? These three types seem to stick together in the tank.

Then I only have two golden barbs left. I'll add more in a few days as soon as i decide my tank is safe.

I just returned two golden barbs to the pet store. I've had them less than a week, but something was horribly wrong with them, bright red around the face. Found out it was mouth rot. Great. And, I've been fighting with the ph, but I have it where I want it now, so all should be good now.

I'm going to add a rubber lipped pleco and a silver tipped shark and maybe a catfish.

Wait wait wait - how big is your tank? 1 Angelfish needs a 29g tank at minimum!

Silver Tipped Sharks get to be 14" (and is a type of Catfish). It is a brackish water fish and should ONLY be in a brackish water tank. They will also eat fish that are smaller than they are. I do NOT recommend this fish! Unless you have a 150g tank or something like that!

Please pleas PLEASE research (thoroughly) ANY fish that you plan on putting in your tank (adult size!!!!) before getting them - to be sure you have the space, filtration and tank mates that are appropriate.

Sorry, not trying to be rude, just trying to save some fish.

My tank is 55 gal.

I had another look at the info on sharks. And, you're right, it is too big.

I will get three more gold barbs though to replace the one that died and the two with mouth rot.

Then I'd like something to eat the algae and to eat the little bits of food on the bottom. I was thinking of a rubber lipped pleco as they stay small.

Rubber lipped pleco stays small, as do the Bristle Nose Plecos, Clown Plecos and Zebra Plecos. Plecs are ok for eating algae, but I like my little Oto Cats. They should be in a group of at least 3. They are super docile.... my frogs kick them all the time and they don't move - so maybe research and see if they will be ok with the Barbs. If you do get a pleco, make sure you have real drift wood, as they do eat that as well.
